The Tesselaar Tulip Festival takes over a working flower farm at Silvan, about an hour east of Melbourne, with more than a million spring flowers across the fields. Each weekend has a theme, from Turkish and Dutch weekends to jazz, rock and an Irish finale, with food trucks and tractor rides every day. Kids 16 and under get in free and parking is free. The farm says the tulips flowered late this year but are now in full colour, and tickets have been cut by 30 per cent.

Getting there: Parking on site is free, with room for coaches. By public transport, take the train to Lilydale or Belgrave, then the Route 663 bus to the farm at 357 Monbulk Road, Silvan.
